VINSSEN Co., LTD Launches Eco-Friendly Passenger Boat 'Kim Si-min No. 2'
with Electric Propulsion System
Completion of the Passage of the 'Standards for Electric Propulsion Water Leisure Equipment' enacted by the Korea Coast Guard.
VINSSEN, a company specializing in
sustainable marine mobility solutions, announced that its eco-friendly
passenger boat 'Kim Si-min No. 2,' equipped with its proprietary electric
propulsion system, has officially commenced operation on the 13th of October.
Operating at the Mangjin Dock in the
Namgang River in Jinju, South Gyeongsang Province, the 'Kim Si-min No. 2' is an
electric-powered vessel built to align with the government's eco-friendly
policies, requiring an investment of 1.8 billion KRW. Notably, it is the first
vessel to successfully pass the 'Standards for Electric Propulsion Water
Leisure Equipment’ established by the Korean Coast Guard in March of this year..
To supply the electric propulsion
system for 'Kim Si-min No. 2', VINSSEN signed a contract with a shipyard in
Jinju, South Gyeongsang Province, in December of last year to construct the
eco-friendly passenger boat and install the charging facilities. Initially,
inspections had to adhere to the Ship Safety Act due to a lack of guidelines
for electric propulsion systems for water leisure equipment. However, with the
establishment of these guidelines in March, the application of electric
propulsion systems to water leisure equipment became feasible.
The promulgation of these guidelines
aims to activate water leisure activities while participating in global
decarbonization initiatives, as demand for electric-powered leisure boats has
grown with advancements in battery technology. The Korean Coast Guard, in
cooperation with experts from academia, industry, and research, has enacted
standards for electric propulsion water leisure equipment using battery systems
of 5 kWh or more.
The electric propulsion system
installed on 'Kim Si-min No. 2' is composed of an outboard motor and a power
motor, along with lithium-ion batteries, onboard electric chargers, and an
integrated propulsion control system, all of which are designed to enhance
safety and efficiency.
VINSSEN aims to convert vessels to
eco-friendly (electric and hydrogen hybrid) designs and is engaged in the
production of small eco-friendly ships and marine fuel cells. With over 50
patented technologies, the company is developing and manufacturing electric
propulsion and hydrogen fuel cell power generation systems for ships. Notably,
last year, VISSEN successfully delivered the pure electric passenger boat
'Garden Dream' and a charging system for the Suncheon Bay International Garden
Expo.
Additionally, VINSSEN has been
involved in projects applying hydrogen fuel cell systems to ships in
partnership with global energy companies from its base in Singapore.
